The Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for delivering advanced technical expertise across the organisation’s virtualisation and core infrastructure estate. Acting as the primary owner of the VMware environment, the role ensures stable, scalable, and secure infrastructure services while supporting wider IT operations and providing senior?level escalation.
Main duties and responsibilities
Virtualisation & Core Infrastructure
- Lead the design, deployment, configuration, and maintenance of VMware virtual environments.
- Monitor performance and capacity, optimise resources, and ensure high availability.
- Support and administer Windows Server environments, including file servers, domain services, and Group Policy.
- Manage and troubleshoot Active Directory and Entra ID, including identity, permissions, and policy configuration.
- Support Exchange (on?prem or hybrid), including mailbox administration and email flow.
- Implement system updates, patching, and hardening across infrastructure components.
Resilience, Documentation & Security
- Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and improvements.
- Maintain detailed documentation of configurations, procedures, and change activity.
- Apply security best practices and support enterprise security tooling.
- Support storage, server hardware, and enterprise backup and recovery solutions.
Collaboration & 3rd?Line Support
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex infrastructure issues.
- Work with IT colleagues to support enterprise applications and services.
- Provide guidance and technical input across multi disciplinary teams.
- Assist in the adoption of cloud technologies and modern infrastructure approaches.
Desirable Education/Qualifications
- HNC/HND in a computing discipline or equivalent hands on experience.
- Degree in a computing discipline.
- VMware (VCP), Microsoft (MCSA/MCSE), or other relevant certifications.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Minimum 2 years in an IT role.
- Experience managing a large virtualisation environment.
- Strong Windows Server and Active Directory administration experience.
- Knowledge of identity management and Microsoft Server technologies.
- Exposure to cybersecurity tools and cloud services.
- 2+ years in a 3rd line/infrastructure focused role.
- Broad experience with enterprise infrastructure engineering.
- Exchange and email security experience.
- Collaboration platform administration.
- Automation/scripting (PowerShell preferred).
- Experience with server/storage hardware.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP).
- Exposure to Microsoft Power Platform.
- Awareness of emerging industry technologies.
Desirable Technical Skills & Experience
- Proven VMware virtualisation experience.
- Strong Windows Server/AD/GPO administration.
- Exchange Server (2016/2019 or hybrid) support.
- PowerShell scripting for automation.
- Solid networking fundamentals.
- Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
- Experience managing virtualisation environments at scale.
- Demonstrable scripting/automation expertise.
- Understanding of backup and recovery strategies.
