Head of Civil / Structural Engineering
Superior Recruitment Group have a fantastic opportunity for a Head of Civil/ Structural Engineering to join their large client in Adlington or Sunderland.
The purpose of the Head of Civil/ Structural Engineering role is to be ultimately responsible for the delivery of Civil/ Structural engineering scope across projects, studies, and bids; this includes ensuring designs meet the highest standards with regards to safety, code compliance, scope alignment, quality, cost, and on-time delivery. In this role you will promote structural efficiency, cost optimisation, and quality of output, through resource management and acting as a business subject matter expert. This is a functional role with management and occasional customer facing responsibilities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Wholly accountable for the quality of Civil/ Structural engineering output, and on-time delivery in
• accordance with project requirements.
• Ensure all Civil/ Structural designs are code compliant, meet specification, safe in design, and consider lifecycle requirements.
• Support Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Bids with information and guidance.
• Work closely with other Department Heads in the business to ensure synergy.
• Promote Civil/ Structural/ equipment standardisation and re-use.
• Line management responsibilities and duties across multiple sites; responsible for departmental performance and setting objectives to meet business and individual goals.
• Development of Civil/ Structural engineering tools and processes that ensure designs are robust and outputs in line with scope.
• Checking and Approval of Civil/ Structural calculations, reports, and analytical models to ensure compliance with scope (as provided by Project Engineer).
• Support CAT 2/ CAT 3 checking requirements with supplementary information as required.
• Attend sites to conduct site and/ or condition surveys and prepare reports on findings thereafter.
• Attend project model/ design reviews as required, supporting discussions on Civil/ Structural efficiency, interfacing, and tolerancing where applicable.
• Attend client meetings as requested by the Project Engineer/ Project Manager.
• Exercise and promote cost reduction, value engineering, standardisation, risk reduction, and a right first-time approach throughout all work scopes.
• Participate in lessons learned meetings and apply continuous improvement.
• Responsible for the rectification and long-term preventative measures resulting from any departmental NCR.
• Support bids/ proposals with steel weights, configurations, engineering time, and concept designs as requested.
• Identify suitable sub-contractor supply chain assessing competence to perform scopes. Responsible for verifying sub-contractor output is correct in accordance with scope provided by Project Engineering.
• Set controls and monitor departmental performance against KPIs.
• Driven to reduce Engineering lead times, improve quality and accuracy, and reduce costs without compromising on safety. Commitment to driving continuous improvement, and a culture of accountability.
• Responsible for the definition, adherence, and continual review of all ISO 9001 procedures and templates relating to discipline. Support internal/ external audits as required.
• Deliver works in alignment with the business’ ISO 9001 processes and templates as controlled within the Quality Management System (COS).
• Engage with the quarterly 1-2-1 process and take actions to address areas for improvement.
• Ensure personal objectives are completed in a timely manner and drive overall departmental/ business objectives year-on-year.
• Maintain alignment with company values and vision.
• Any other ad hoc duties as may be required, and as commensurate with the grade of post.
Education & Experience
• BEng (Hons) in Engineering (preferably Civil or Structural)
• Chartered Engineer (CEng, preferably ICE or IStructE)
• Strong experience in a Civil/ Structural engineering field.
• Knowledge of the construction & process industries and applicable standards.
• Ability to use structural analytical software unaided (STAAD Pro or TEKLA Structures preferred).
• Ability to interpret Site Investigation reports and identify civil implications.
• Understanding of load cases and combinations, and ability to deduce that structures are behaving as intended through calculation or analysis.
• Experience of managing teams to meet expectations in a project delivery environment.
• Highly organised and able to prioritise workload in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality performance/ output.
• Strong written and verbal communicator with internal and external customers alike, with good presentation skills
• Completed the required company induction into this role
